Post Is going to a University worth it?
on: August 31, 21:54

Hello guys,

I've been wondering if going to a four year university is worth it. Currently I'm attending a community college and I want to major in filmaking, it's always been my dream. But my parents disagree with my career choice and tell me I should pick a career path that is more "stable," such as an engineer or some type of technician. So I guess their afraid I won't find a job after I graduate. Anyway I don't have enough money to pay for a four year university, I was planning on getting loans but do you guys think it's worth getting into debt? I hear a lot of stories about ppl getting their degrees then having to take up lousy jobs like waitressing because they didnt find a good job. I know you went to college Spike, tell me was it worth it for you?

I would like to hear your guy's opinions/experiences :)

I think it's worth investing in your education and doing what you desire. But you must know that school education is needed but it only makes you a good employee and not a good employer. It's not that kind of knowlege that will make you get the big $$$$.

Although I'm not sure if your American but I know the colleges over there are enourmous expense.

In my opinion getting a big loan from a bank is the worst idea ever. I would really really really avoid that trap and try to find another source of income to pay that. Most people after getting a loan and finishing school past their days working their asses off just to pay it. Besides after that people get a loan for a new car, house and lol your toasted. Then your ass officialy belongs to the goverment and bank.

Anyway look to the interest rate over your loan and make the calculations.

Hey Abel, ,

I like morrison's post regarding getting a loan from the bank lol , yes it is huge pain in the ass, I am also student at university and also taking loan and you do not have to take loans from a bank , here in Canada there is a program called osap which is student payement assistant program , you should check in your area code to see if you have similar program such as a student payment asistant program which is still a pain in the ass but better than getting a loan from the bank and they are more flexiable on payements, You should go for the field you are intrested in but the same time do your research like talking to your faculty advisor, talking with people in the film making industry (interviewing them regarding to see if it's good trend) . Also just because everyone else is not getting a job doesn't mean you will struggle too since I am getting job offers left and right i created affirmations which helps me attract the jobs i desire. You can also have job as technician and still do film making on the side, I know handful of people who live a professional career as doctor or egineer that still do film making on the side and very sucessful at it .A good formal education is very important to be sucessful in today's world ,

Also don't let the negative economy affect your mindset, other people's situition should not influence your situition, know that you will find a job , most of people are negative towards finding a job and they attracting unemployement into thier life, remember there is a law known as law of attractions, so think positive , for sure you will be great. Let us know how it all turns out,

Good luck ,

I was born in Mexico, Morrison but I do live in the US, and I can totally see why people would avoid getting big loans, but I plan on getting mine mine from a government program that helps out students, problably like to one you mentioned Swappa. I'm also working my but off to get good grades, so I have a better chance at getting scholarships.

Hey Swappa what are you studying at your university? Just curious since your saying your getting a lot of job offers, but I bet your mindset has a lot to do with it.

For now, I have my mind set on filmmaking. I did some research and they say that the film making industry is a tough one to get into, but all I want is a good job to get started, it doesn't have to be in the industry per say. I can do some video editing for a company for example.

Anyways thanks for your responses guys, it helps to get other's perspective on things.

I am also thinking about quitting studying... Now I see that I won't do any good carreer after graduating university. Also I don't like studying this thing, it isn't as interesting as I thought it will be and I see it is not for me. Only thing that's stopping me from quitting is fear of upsetting my family and being 100% financially dependent on my parents. Guys, what do you think? Should I quit?

@Kkr, we all have a gift. What is your gift in life? Perhaps your gift can guide you towards a career direction? Your education, in which ever form it takes, can then focus on strengthing your gift so you can have a career you really enjoy.

Hey Kkr, It is a tough decision, but you have to make it, and it does take some courage. To know for sure, you have to have a definitive goal, that you want to achieve, and if you can't find nothing of value from that University, u know what to do. And if it's not something that you want, it's fine. Knowing what you want is important as knowing what you don't want.
And also, be completly honest with your family, they might get mad, but you stand up for yourself and your decision, and that's a self-respect builder right there.
Cheers, man!
